Star Skin: Jon

Star Skin: Jon

I'd like for you to imagine the world of insects, plants, animals, stones and birds. Then imagine an artist, gardener, composer, and more than anything else, a careful listener. That's Jon.  Jon makes art, he teaches, he gardens, he makes space to listen to the rhythms of the natural world and to you - and to me - and to anyone who is glad to be sharing the planet with all of us in our star skin. It can be overwhelming at times- 7 billion of us (humans) hurtling through space on our tiny rock, but I take solace (and I hope you do to) in the following-  While feeling overwhelmed its comforting to know that Jon is either teaching, listening with wonder, playing (in a multitude of ways), cooking, making music, experimenting, watering plants, feeding chickens, loving his family, friends, students, gardens...Jon is always doing this.  I think it comes from a place of profound love. The love of the honeybee, the whale, the trilobite, sea turtle, the artichoke gone to flower (you can understand the purple heart in this context better), the bamboo, the molding of clay, Kathy's poetry, Jaja's truth and Ella's dream - all of which fall like the ocean waves endlessly against the shore. It's all that and more. Jon understands our place in this star skin, he knows it is hard to feel the whole at once. You don't have to. Begin close to home and grow the edge.
